On Arrival

On arrival at the consulting rooms, you are welcomed by a receptionist and will be asked to complete a registration form to ensure that we have your correct information. During the consultation with Miss Eze, a thorough history will be taken and a careful clinical examination performed. Certain procedures may be necessary and include ear microsuction, otoendoscopy, nasendoscopy, audiometry and tympanometry.

Please advise us prior to the consultation if you require a translator. We will gladly arrange this on your behalf.

Outpatient Procedures

During your consultation, it may be necessary to perform the following procedures in the consulting room:

Ear Microsuction

Microscuction of the ears involves the use of a microscope to assess the ear and suction to clean the ear canal. The microscope allows better assessment of the ear canala and eardrum due to the magnification and illumination.

During the procedure, you will be asked to sit very still. The suction can be noisy and you may experience minor discomfort. Occasionally some dizziness may occur which lasts a few minutes. If it is not possible to adequately clear the ear in the clinic, it may be necessary to perform ear microsuction under general anaesthetic in the operating theatre especially in children.

Common conditions treated with microsuction include:

  • Wax
  • Otitis Externa
  • Foreign bodies in the ear canal
  • Cholesteatoma
  • Hearing Loss

Rigid Otoendoscopy

This involves using a small telescope to examine the ear in fine detail whist sitting. When performed, you need to remain very still. The procedure is not painful and lasts about 30 seconds.

Common conditions diagnosed with rigid otoendoscopy include:

  • Eardrum perforation
  • Cholesteatoma
  • Hearing Loss

Nasendoscopy
Flexible and Rigid Nasendoscopy can be done with a flexible or rigid endoscope allowing detailed examination of the nose, throat and voice box. Before the examination you will be offered and anaesthetic spray for the nose that helps to numb the inside of the nose before the procedure. Afterwards the nasendoscope is passed in to the nose. The procedure usually takes less than one minute.

Common conditions diagnosed with nasendoscopy include:

  • Septal deviation
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Nasal polyps
  • Sinusitis

Special Investigations

Every effort is made to ensure that all treatment is done during the first consultation in a time efficient manner with as few sessions as possible. Occasionally, additional investigations may be necessary as part of your treatment. These may include blood tests, X-rays, CT/MRI/Ultrasound Scans that will be arranged by Miss Eze and can usually be done within 48 hours. Children under five years old that require a hearing test are referred to a specialist paediatric audiologist.

After the special investigations have been done a follow-up appointment will be made with Miss Eze to discuss the results and any further treatment.
